    Defensible Space

Defensible Space is defined as: The buffer zone around a structure where vegetation and other combustible materials are managed to reduce wildfire risk and slow fire spread.

Defensible space is the area around a home where vegetation, debris, and other combustible materials are cleared or reduced to slow the spread of wildfire and improve firefighter safety. Creating effective defensible space is one of the most important steps homeowners in wildfire-prone areas can take to protect their property.

Zone 0 (0-5 feet from structure): This immediate zone should use noncombustible materials only. Remove all dead plants, dry leaves, pine needles, and debris. Use gravel, stone, or concrete for landscaping. Keep this area completely clear of anything that could ignite.

Zone 1 (5-30 feet from structure): Create a "lean, clean, and green" landscape. Space trees so crowns are at least 10 feet apart. Remove lower tree branches up to 6-10 feet from the ground. Keep grass mowed to 4 inches or less. Choose fire-resistant plants and keep them well-watered.

Zone 2 (30-100 feet from structure): Reduce fuel loads by spacing trees and shrubs. Remove dead wood and debris. Create horizontal and vertical spacing to prevent fire from climbing into tree crowns. On slopes, extend this zone as fire travels faster uphill.

Insurance Benefits: Many insurers offer discounts for documented defensible space. Some may require it for coverage in high-risk wildfire zones. Photograph your defensible space work and keep receipts for any improvements.

Maintenance Requirements: Defensible space is not a one-time project. Regular maintenance before fire season is essential, including clearing gutters, trimming vegetation, and removing accumulated debris.

State fire agencies like CAL FIRE, CSFS (Colorado), and Idaho Firewise provide specific guidance for local conditions. Following these guidelines helps protect your home and may improve your insurance options.
